What it measures

The Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U, BLS series CUUR0000SA0) measures the average change over time in the prices urban consumers pay for a market basket of goods and services. It represents more than 90% of the U.S. population.

The headline 12-month rate is computed from the not seasonally adjusted index, because seasonal factors cancel over a full year. Month-to-month changes are read from the seasonally adjusted index (CUSR0000SA0).

IV.

How and when it is published

BLS data collectors record tens of thousands of prices and rent quotes each month across urban areas, and BLS weights them by spending shares from the Consumer Expenditure Surveys.

Next scheduled release: November 10, 2026 at 08:30 ET (release calendar).
