As of 9 p.m. on May 14, the first day of candidate registration for South Korea’s ninth nationwide simultaneous local elections and National Assembly by-elections scheduled for June 3, a total of 6,833 people had submitted registration documents. According to the election tally, only some of those applications had completed the full registration process at that point. The overall competition ratio stood at 1.4 to 1. The first day’s filings show the formal election process moving into full swing, with prospective candidates for local government, local councils and by-elections submitting paperwork.
