Korea’s Top Three Shipbuilders to Raise Direct Hiring by 20%
Published: · Source: mk.co.kr

The government has decided, after talks with Korea’s three major shipbuilders, to increase directly employed personnel by 20%. The measure is aimed at adjusting the workforce structure in shipbuilding sites and narrowing compensation gaps between prime contractor and subcontractor workers. The government will also maintain its policy of paying performance bonuses to employees of large shipbuilders and partner firms at the same ratio. As a result, subcontractor employees will continue to receive bonuses at the same rate as those at major shipbuilders. The plan combines expanded direct hiring by the three shipbuilders with a shared bonus principle, and is expected to affect discussions on workforce supply and working conditions in the industry.
