Replica of Looted Goryeo Buddhist Statue to Be Enshrined at Buseoksa

A replica of a Goryeo Buddhist statue that was looted by Japanese pirates, returned to Korea, and then sent back to Japan after an ownership dispute will be enshrined at Buseoksa Temple in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province. According to Kyodo News and Yonhap News Agency on May 12, the recently completed replica of the gilt-bronze Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva statue is set to be placed at the temple. The statue drew attention in both Korea and Japan through debates over looting, return, and ownership. With the original returned to Japan, Buseoksa will preserve the memory through a replica.
